What Does a Scala Developer Do?

Scala is a new multi-paradigm programming language aiming to describe popular programming patterns in a concise, expressive, and type-safe way. Scala effortlessly mixes the features of object-oriented and functional languages. It stands for Scalable language. It also provides JavaScript runtimes. Scala is greatly influenced by Java and various other programming languages like Lisp, Haskell etc.

German computer scientist Martin Odersky, a professor at École Polytechnique Fédérale de Lausanne (EPFL) in Switzerland, invented Scala. Martin Odersky is also the co-creator of javac (Java Compiler), Generic Java, and EPFL’s Funnel programming language. He began to design the Scala in 2001. Scala was first released publicly in 2004 on the Java platform as its first version. In June 2004, Scala was adapted for the .Net Framework. Soon it was followed by a second version, i.e. (v2.0), in 2006. At the JavaOne conference in 2012, Scala was acknowledged as the winner of the ScriptBowl tournament. Since June 2012, Scala does not provide any support for .Net Framework. The latest version of scala is 2.12.6, which was released on 27-Apr-2018.

What Is Scala Used For?

Because Scala is a general-purpose programming language, there’s no limit to what it can be used for. Thanks to its interoperability with Java, it’s a perfect solution for developing and deploying apps to the JVM, especially desktop apps.

Because of Android’s heritage, Scala is becoming one of the most popular options for Android development, along with Java and Kotlin. In fact, thought bots Mike Burns discussed the benefits of utilizing Scala for Android development as far back as 2011:

”Scala can be viewed as a superior Java. To start with, you don’t need as many semicolons. But Scala gives you the power of current abstractions. Traits, implicit, type-checked null, blocks–everything you need to get some proper coding done.”

Thanks to the Scala.js compiler, developers may compile their code to JavaScript, making it possible to create web applications with Scala. Scala.js is interoperable with React and AngularJS, adding to its power and abilities.

Responsibilities of a Scala Developer

The primary role of a Scala developer is to design, develop and maintain applications using Scala. They are also involved in any architectural development operations relevant to the application.

Scala developers build code according to app specs, do software analysis, and work as part of the software development team to verify that designs for applications comply with standards.

Additionally, they are in charge of testing and debugging applications and making recommendations for modifications in order to upgrade the application processes and infrastructure.

Scala developers work efficiently across teams, contribute to team performance improvement and record the entire development process – from the conception stage to the final output.

What are the Responsibilities of a Scala developer?

  • Design, develop and maintain applications using Scala
  • Documentation of the designs and specifications
  • In charge of any architectural development activities about application
  • Write code according to app specification
  • Conduct software analysis
  • Work as part of the software development team to ensure the application is following specifications Test and debug applications
  • Recommend any improvements to application processes and infrastructure
  • Collaborate effectively across teams
  • Contribute to team performance improvement
  • Document development process

Skills of a Scala Developer

Scala developers should have experience in object-oriented languages like Java, Python, and JavaScript. They must also have experience building software solutions.

It is important that they possess good technical skills and have a thorough understanding of object-oriented programming (OOP) concepts and techniques. Basic knowledge of Spark, Hadoop, and MapReduce is also a crucial necessity.

Scala developers must have experience dealing with ETL architecture as well as public cloud platforms such as AWS. They must also have a thorough understanding of software development processes.

In addition to all the talents described above, Scala developers must also possess good communication and analytical skills. They must also be able to communicate facts clearly and straightforwardly.
